Welcome to the Energy Resources & Petroleum Engineering Program

ROGRAM CHAIR:

Hussein Hoteit, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering
Building 5, Level 3, Room 3221

The Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering (ERPE) Program, for both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, focuses on modern reservoir description, engineering, and manage- ment. Students in this program receive advanced knowledge and training in geology, geophysical characterization, thermodynamics, geomechanics, fluid flow, and reservoir engineering. Our students participate in scientific research activities that may include mathematical analyses, computational modeling, experimental research, and field studies. Ph.D. candidates focus on original research-driven to advance the boundaries of knowledge, including challenging topics in energy and environment, such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), geothermal, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

If you are visiting this website as a potential applicant to our program, we can confidently say that the KAUST experience is a truly unique opportunity for brilliant M.Sc. and Ph.D. students who share the dream to make a difference in our field and in the world.  We hope you will consider KAUST and our program.

M.Sc. Degree

The Master's Degree (M.Sc.) is awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 36 credit hours. Students are expected to complete the M.Sc. degree within 3 to 4 semesters (including one summer semester, i.e., 12 to 18 months in total). The M.Sc. degree is offered for traditional full-time students and could be a terminal M.Sc., as well as a gateway to the Ph.D. program. All M.Sc. students are expected to complete a capstone experience that includes thesis preparation and oral defense. The non-thesis option is not supported in the ERPE Program.

Ph.D. Degree

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is designed to prepare students for research careers in academia and industry. Typically it takes from 3 to 4 years to complete with prior M.Sc. degree. The achieving Ph.D. degree requires original research, culminating in the Ph.D. Dissertation Defense.
