Welcome to the Chemistry Program

PROGRAM CHAIR:

Niveen M. Khashab, Ph.D.

Professor of Chemistry

Building 4, Level 3, Office 3277

Aims and Scope

The KAUST Chemistry (Chem) Program was established in 2010 to provide a modern, research-oriented education in chemistry. It is one of the top internationally ranked programs at KAUST. Leveraging the outstanding facilities at KAUST, the program distinguishes itself by a clear focus and strong emphasis on current research challenges related to polymers, catalysis, and nanotechnology.

Mission and Vision

The Chemistry Program at KAUST is home to world class professors that are conducting cutting edge research on the forefronts of polymers, catalysis, and nanotechnology. Our mission is to graduate highly knowledgeable and trained chemists that can excel in academic, industrial, and managerial settings. We aim to publish highly impactful research papers and patents that will strengthen the Chemistry Program international ranking among the top worldwide and empower immediate industrial translation to support the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision.

We invite you to explore our website to find out more about graduate study programs and faculty research groups. Please follow the Chemistry students Twitter account @chemsstudents for the most recent updates.

M.Sc. Degree

The Master's Degree (M.Sc.) is awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 36 credit hours. Students are expected to complete the M.Sc. degree within 3 to 4 semesters (including one summer semester, i.e., 12 to 18 months in total). The M.Sc. degree is offered for traditional full-time students and could be a terminal M.Sc., as well as a gateway to the Ph.D. program. All M.Sc. students are expected to complete a capstone experience that includes thesis preparation and oral defense. The non-thesis option is not supported in the Chem Program.

Ph.D. Degree

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is designed to prepare students for research careers in academia and industry. Typically it takes from 3 to 4 years to complete with prior M.Sc. degree. The achieving Ph.D. degree requires original research, culminating in the Ph.D. Dissertation Defense.
