Chemistry MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM

Duration of Study

  • M.S. (with Thesis): 4 semesters + one summer session
  • M.S. (Non-Thesis): 3 semesters + one summer session

The non-thesis degree option is available only for students who intend to continue their Chemistry studies at the PhD level at KAUST on the same general topic (e.g. M.S. Ph.D. students). M.S. with thesis students may also continue to the Ph.D. level at KAUST with the same advisor, but a change in research topic is required. Both options require a minimum of 36 credits:

Mandatory Courses

  • Core Courses (12 credits) from organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry
  • Lab Rotation (3 credits) to help identify a research group to join
  • Electives (6 credits) to tailor your educational experience to meet individual research and educational goals. Current offerings from Chemistry cover polymer chemistry, sustainability, electrochemistry, and crystallography.  Elective courses are not limited to the Chemistry program and can also be selected from any program with the approval of your Academic Advisor.  Other courses can be found at this link (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology - Courses).
  • Research, Broadening/Internship(total 15 credits) providing a holistic research experience. Students complete their MS research based on original work. With approval, non-thesis students may apply for internships and other course work to partially substitute; see the Program Guide and contact the GPSA for details.
  • Graduate Seminars (non-credit) with invited speakers.
  • Winter Enrichment Program (WEP) (non-credit)

CHEMISTRY Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAM

Duration of Study

Ph.D. 8 semesters + 4 summer sessions

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is designed to prepare students for research careers in academia and industry. The PhD degree is awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 72 credits. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be achieved to graduate. Individual courses require a minimum of a B-minus for course credit.

Requirements

  • 300-level courses *(6 credits)
  • Dissertation Research (66 credits minimum)
  • Graduate Seminar (attendance and delivery, non-credit)
  • Winter Enrichment Program (WEP) (non-credit)

In addition, a qualifying exam and proposal defense will be administered.

* Only one Chem 394 or 394C can be counted. A selection of courses can be found at this link (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology - Courses).
