KAUST Physical Science and Engineering Division Welcomes Professor Majed Alrefae

31 March, 2026

The Physical Science and Engineering (PSE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is pleased to welcome Professor Majed Alrefae to its faculty. Alrefae joins the division as an instructional assistant professor specialized in advanced materials and their applications for sustainable energy technologies.

In the past, Alrefae’s research centered on the large-scale processing of advanced materials, particularly graphene, with the goal of advancing materials solutions for sustainable energy systems. By combining materials engineering with scalable manufacturing approaches, he worked on technologies that support the global transition toward cleaner energy.

At KAUST, as an instructional professor, Alrefae plans to integrate his scientific background with innovative teaching initiatives. He aims to develop advanced instructional laboratories and educational resources that will equip students with practical skills relevant to emerging technologies and future industrial challenges.

During his first years at KAUST, Alrefae intends to adopt a student-centered teaching approach that emphasizes mentorship, hands-on learning and collaboration. His goal is to help students build the skills necessary to contribute to education, research and development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and internationally.

Returning to KAUST carries personal significance for Alrefae. As a KAUST alumnus, he expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with mentors and colleagues at the university. “It is a true honor to return to KAUST as faculty and to once again be part of this inspiring academic community,” he said.

Alrefae also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration in education. A guiding principle he often shares is: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” For him, the statement reflects the importance of collective effort in achieving meaningful and lasting impact.

He encourages students interested in joining his classes to fully leverage the university’s resources and research environment. “KAUST offers exceptional facilities and state-of-the-art instruments,” he said. “Students should take full advantage of these resources to enrich their learning experience and strengthen their research capabilities.”

With his combined background on advanced materials research, education and mentorship, Alrefae’s appointment further strengthens the Physical Science and Engineering Division’s commitment to excellence and academic leadership.
