From juvenile arc crust to rare metal fertility: Geological evolution and metallogenic potential of the Arabian–Nubian Shield

Abstract

Rare metal granites of the Arabian–Nubian Shield constitute a significant but incompletely evaluated source of critical and strategic metals, including Li, Ta, Nb, Sn, W, Be, Zr, U, Th, and rare earth elements. This presentation examines their evolution from Neoproterozoic arc accretion and crustal assembly to post-collisional felsic magmatism, extreme fractionation, volatile enrichment, and hydrothermal alteration. Selected occurrences, including the Al-Ghurayyah, Jabal Sayid, Dayheen, Abu Dabbab, and Igla deposits, demonstrate the diversity of A-type, alkaline, peralkaline, peraluminous, and Sn–W–Ta granite–pegmatite systems within the shield. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of evolved plutons, cupolas, structural corridors, greisen zones, aplites, and pegmatite swarms in focusing rare-metal mineralization. The presentation further evaluates the relationship between host-rock composition, tectonic setting, magmatic differentiation, volatile evolution, and metal enrichment. These factors highlight the Arabian–Nubian Shield as a highly prospective province for integrated, system-scale exploration of rare-metal granites and pegmatites.
