Meet ESSE Faculty: Research Overview III

 

Summary

Each ESSE faculty provides a ~10min overview of their activities. This presents an opportunity to learn more about and understand better the diverse, fascinating, and impactful research the PI and his/her associated research team are doing. The idea is to inspire students, postdocs, and researchers alike to explore further ideas, collaboration, and become part of a combined effort to enhance, enrich and edify KAUST on its mission for Saudi Arabia to meet its Vision 2030 goals - with special focus on the energy and subsurface sectors.

Presenters

On Sep 30th, the following faculty will present:

1) Ibrahim Hoteit (Professor) - Earth Fluid Modeling and Prediction group

“The Red Sea is our backyard — small in size, oceanic in complexity. We investigate its variability and its influence on the global climate using high-performance models and advanced observing systems.”

2) Frans Van Buchem (Professor) - SEASTAR: Climate, Sea-level and Stratigraphic Architecture group

“The outcrops on the Arabian Peninsula are a natural laboratory for the study of the geological past.”

3) Cunqi Jia (Assistant Professor) - Earth Systems Science and Engineering program

“Numerical simulation is to produce a virtual field for scaling up experiments and testing different production alternatives to optimize the best economic value.”

4) Tariq Alkhalifah (Professor) - Seismic Wave Analysis Group (SWAG) group

“Seismic imaging is arguably the single most important step in treating recorded seismic data, and has contributed to some of the most important finds in the petroleum industry.”
