Meet ESSE Faculty: Research Overview II

 

Summary

Each ESSE faculty provides a ~10min overview of their activities. This presents an opportunity to learn more about and understand better the diverse, fascinating, and impactful research the PI and his/her associated research team are doing. The idea is to inspire students, postdocs, and researchers alike to explore further ideas, collaboration, and become part of a combined effort to enhance, enrich and edify KAUST on its mission for Saudi Arabia to meet its Vision 2030 goals - with special focus on the energy and subsurface sectors.

Presenters

On Sep 16th, the following faculty will present:

1) Volker C. Vahrenkamp (Professor) - Carbonate Reservoir Studies group (CaResS Geology)

“The complex carbonate formations of the Red Sea and the Arabian Platform bring unique opportunities to study fundamentals of carbonate geology, paleoclimate signals as well as future energy supplies and applications.”​ 

2) Martin Mai (Professor) - Computational Earthquake Seismology group (CES)

“Earthquakes cannot be predicted. Earthquakes cannot be prevented. Hence, we must prepare for them!”

  • Earthquake phenomena across broad space & time scales
  • Dynamics of earthquake rupture
  • Ground-shaking and tsunami simulations in the Gulf of Aqaba
  • Imaging the Earth structure using seismic waves
  • Geothermal energy in syn-rift sedimentary basins along the Red Sea coast

3) Maryam Alghannam (Ibn Rushd Assistant Professor) - Interface Physics and Poromechanics Lab

"Understanding how fluids interact with faults and fractures is critical for mitigating seismic hazards and guiding the safe and sustainable development of subsurface energy technologies."

4) Sigurjón Jónsson (Professor) - Crustal Deformation and InSAR group

"We use state-of-the-art satellite geodetic techniques to study ground deformation due to a wide variety of geophysical processes, from earthquakes to subsurface pressure changes — if it moves the ground, we are interested!”
