Abstract
In this talk Colin Garner will present some personal thoughts on sustainability, covering its definition, materials, legislation and design, with the aim of initiating open discussion amongst the attendees.
Biography
Professor Colin Garner FRENG, Ph.D. is Emeritus Professor of Applied Thermodynamics at Loughborough University, UK and runs his own consultancy. He has held over 40 major government and industrial grants for advanced research covering power and energy systems, engines, fuels, fluid flow, heat transfer, combustion and emissions control. His research has been featured in New Scientist and on BBC TV and radio. He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers and has six granted patents. His research has received several international prizes, including from the SAE and IMechE. He is directly engaged with major international engine and vehicle companies. He served as an academic adviser to the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) Heavy Duty Vehicle Strategy Action Group, as a member of the Automotive Council R&D Group and as the Technical Director of the Caterpillar Innovation and Research Centre at Loughborough University. He is a non-executive director of Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) UK Ltd. - a government-industry partnership supporting over £1.5 Billion of vehicle propulsion research and development projects across the UK. From 2005 to 2017 he was the Editor-in-Chief of Proc. IMechE: Journal of Automobile Engineering and now continues to serve on the journal's editorial board. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He regularly enjoys driving his cars (as fast as he can/dares…) on a wide range of UK circuits, including Silverstone and Donington.
