Material Science and Engineering and Applied Physics Graduate Seminar

Abstract

Rapid developments in optical modulation have enabled nearly arbitrary sculpturing of the distribution for various parameters of light (amplitude, phase and polarization) in both space and time. Based on personal research experience, I will first provide an overview of spatially structuring of light with increasing complexity and their applications. Then I will present some of the latest developments in spatiotemporal structuring of light and various unique optical topology that have been created recently.

Bio

Dr. Qiwen Zhan is Distinguished Chair Professor of Nanophotonics at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. He received BS in Physics (optoelectronic) from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1996 and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2002. Then he joined the Electro-Optics Program at the University of Dayton as a tenure-track assistant professor (2002), and became tenured associate professor (2008) and was promoted to full professor (2012). At the University of Dayton, he established his Nano Electro-Optics Laboratories (NEOL) and the Fraunhofer Research Center where he served as the founding director. In 2020, he joined the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), and established the Center for Complex Optical fields and Meta-Optical Structures (COSMOS). He has published 1 book, 9 book chapters, more than 200 journal publications, delivered many conference presentations and invited talks/lectures/seminars, and possessed 6 US patents/patent applications. Dr. Zhan is an Associate Editor for Optica, Founding Associate Editor-in-Chief for PhotoniX, Associate Editor for Science Bulletin, Associate Editor for Chinese Optics Letters, Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, and elected Fellow of the OPTICA (formerly OSA) and Fellow of the SPIE.
