Light-matter interactions

  • The candidate is expected to make significant contributions in the research and development of new optical and photonic materials and their applications. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to, new materials for manipulation of light, new photonic systems, metamaterials, optical-band structure engineering, radiative heat management and cooling, new photon-driven synthesis methods, and optical interactions with biological system.

Materials discovery and design by artificial intelligence

  • We seek a candidate in the area of artificial intelligence for material discovery and expert system development for advanced material design. The candidate is expected to develop artificial intelligence computing tools for machine and deep learning of structure-property relationships to accelerate the discovery of materials. The candidate will create and exploit digital techniques, and collaborate with colleagues in experimental and theoretical materials science and engineering.

Solution synthesis of inorganic materials

  • Candidates are sought with expertise in the chemical synthesis and assembly of nanoscale inorganic materials. A strong background in chemistry and solution processing, and demonstrated ability to develop new chemistry and synthetic strategies of nanoscale inorganic materials is expected. The candidate should demonstrate strong mechanistic understanding of nanoscale synthesis processes and phenomena, including interfacial, transport, thermodynamic, and kinetic factors.

Surface science

  • Candidates are sought with strong background in the fundamental characterization of surfaces and interfaces. The successful applicant is expected to develop state-of-the-art ex/in-situ surface and interface analysis methods, and establish strong collaborations with faculty working on various types of devices. Vapor phase synthesis of materials

  • The candidate is expected to start a rigorous research program in the area of vapor phase deposition of materials using methods such chemical vapor deposition, molecular beam deposition, atomic layer deposition, and pulse laser deposition. Candidates with demonstrated fundamental understanding of growth processes, ability to engineer materials at the nanoscale, and experience in emerging applications such as quantum and neuromorphic computing are encouraged to apply.

Postdoctoral Openings Material Science and Engineering

  • One Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available immediately in the Laboratory for Carbon Nanostructures​ in the Physical Science and Engineering Division of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Candidates with expert-level skills in the growth of carbon nanostructures by chemical vapor deposition are encouraged to apply. 

    Major Responsibilities

    The research fellow is expected to propose and optimize new growth methods for carbon nanostructures besides keeping abreast with novel laboratory and industry-based growth approaches and identify synthesis strategies with potential for scale-up. Results will be communicated in the appropriate forums (e.g. journals and conferences) or prepared for intellectual property protection. Further to this, assistance in the day-to-day coordination of the laboratory growth  activities as well as in the guidance of graduate students is anticipated. Enthusiasm to participate in the elaboration of competitive funding proposals is also desirable.​

    Technical Skills
    Proficiency in English is fundamental as well as good communication skills. A track-record of high quality scientific publications as first (or corresponding) author in the CVD field is necessary. ​

    Required Education

    A PhD in materials science, chemistry, physics or related areas is mandatory. The candidate must have first-hand experience in the growth of carbon nanotubes and/or graphene using hot- and/or cold-wall CVD reactors. Someone familiar with AIXTRON reactors would be highly considered. ​​
