Postdoctoral Openings in Earth Science and Engineering

  • Postdoc Position in Modern and Ancient Analogues for Carbonate Reservoirs

Vertical and lateral depositional and structural heterogeneities are key elements influencing pore networks and flow properties in carbonate reservoirs.  With increasing pressure to cost-effectively increase recovery in hydrocarbon reservoirs a better resolution is required of analogue data for modeling reservoir and inter-well scale heterogeneities.  This calls for detailed field work of modern carbonates and outcrop analogues from the similar depositional settings as found in the reservoir.  Understanding must be improved on lateral and vertical facies changes as a function of relative sea-level changes and environmental factors such as wind energy, ocean currents, climate, etc.  Comprehensive 3D data sets are required on a similar scale as simulation models of hydrocarbon reservoirs under development (interwell: meter to 100's of meters; reservoir: km to 10's of km).The aim of this project is to improve the understanding of reservoir heterogeneity by

Physically investigating in detail 3D facies heterogeneities in Red Sea carbonate platforms and Jurassic sequences outcropping in central Saudi Arabia

Mapping and synthesizing fault and fracture systems

Utilizing advanced remote sensing, digital outcrop imaging and seismic acquisition techniques

Processing data statistically for input in 3D static and dynamic reservoir models

Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Carbonate Geology. The candidate should be experienced with field work, mapping, coring, acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic data and lab measurements.  He/ She must be comfortable in remote field locations, on boats and in the water (scuba).  Experience with static and dynamic reservoir modelling techniques is a bonus. Candidates with a good publishing record will be given preference.

Applications are sought for a two-year postdoc position. The position will include a competitive salary based on the candidate's qualifications; benefits include medical and dental insurance, free furnished housing on the KAUST campus, annual travel allowance to visit home country, annual paid vacation, and other generous benefits.

The successful applicant will be part of the Carbonate Reservoirs Geology group (Caress), affiliated to the Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center (ANPERC) at KAUST.

To apply, please send a CV, a letter of interest, and name and contact information of two references to Prof. Volker Vahrenkamp, volker.vahrenkamp@kaust.edu.sa .
